  • Advisory committee

Supervisor/joint Supervisors
Every applicant for Ph.D. studies must choose a supervisor or joint supervisors. The student must then obtain their consent. The supervisors will receive final approval by the departmental Ph.D. committee and/or the University Committee for Research Students and by the Graduate Studies Authority.

Eligibility to serve as a dissertation supervisor
Supervisor: Any faculty member holding the rank of  senior lecturer or higher in Track A, with at least a regular half-time appointment in the department in which the student is enrolled for Ph.D. studies (or at the University for a faculty member who advises a research student in the framework of the University Committee for Research Students). The departmental Ph.D. committee is entitled, in special cases and subject to the confirmation of the Dean of Graduate Studies, to approve the appointment of a retired faculty member as sole supervisor.
Joint supervisors: Any faculty member who is eligible to serve as an supervisor and any faculty member from another accredited academic institution in Israel or abroad of the rank of senior lecturer or higher in Track A, including a retired faculty member.

Advisory committee
The departmental Ph.D. committee/ University Committee for Research Students, in coordination with the supervisor(s), will decide whether to establish an expanded advisory committee for the student. In the event it is decided to establish an advisory committee, it will be appointed at the time of the submission of the research proposal.

Composition of the advisory committee:
The advisory committee will include at least three members: the supervisor(s) who consented to advise the student’s dissertation; a faculty member who is eligible to advise research students and who is considered an expert in the research area of the dissertation or in related areas, and who is not a member of the faculty of the department in which the student is enrolled or in the department in which the advisor is employed; an academic faculty member from outside the University of Haifa who is eligible to advise research students and is considered an expert in the dissertation research area or in related areas.

The supervisor, who will serve as chairperson of the advisory committee, will be appointed by the departmental Ph.D. committee. When the Ph.D. candidate is advised by more than one adviser, the members of the committee will decide among themselves who will serve as chair.
